Berkeley Castle – Access Information

Parking

Free visitor car park with designated disabled car parking spaces near the main entrance.  We also have a coach park situated just inside the roadside entrance; passengers can be dropped off by the main entrance gates.

WCs

One toilet block in the Kitchen Garden, and another block near the Education Centre.  A disabled toilet and baby changing facilities are available at both locations.

Dogs

Regrettably no dogs are allowed other than assistance dogs.

We also respectfully ask that you do not leave pets unattended in vehicles in the car park as there is limited shade in that area.

Ticket Office

Situated in the Kitchen Garden.

Castle interior

Access to the Castle is via the Keep Steps which are uneven and were designed to trip up invaders!  There is a handrail in this area, but we do advise that you take particular care as you ascend these steps.

Unfortunately the first floor rooms are inaccessible for wheelchair users. There is a ramp, for access to the Armoury & The Great Hall.

Mobility scooters - Due to the age & the architecture of the castle, mobility scooters are not able to access the interior of the building.

Gardens

Some areas are wheelchair friendly, although we do have terraces which are only accessible via a series of steps.  There are several benches dotted around the grounds and gardens, which offer the opportunity to take a rest and enjoy the view.

General Health & Safety Advice

Berkeley Castle is a Grade 1 listed building and unfortunately there are very few alterations that we are permitted to carry out within the building.  Please be aware that we have steep stone steps, uneven and polished floors and various flights of stairs between the different public areas.  We ensure that some seats are available within the Castle for those wishing to rest as they tour the rooms and view the exhibits.

In the gardens and grounds there are uneven surfaces, steep terraces, a lily pond, non-edible plants, low branches and slippery surfaces in wet weather – please take care.

We hope that you decide to come and see us.  If there’s anything that we can help with ahead of your visit please don’t hesitate to email us or telephone: 01453 810303
